Foot Reflexology: A Beginner's Guide to This Relaxing Therapy

After a long day on your feet — or a long day in shoes that don't love you back — few things feel better than foot reflexology. It's simple, relaxing and doesn't require undressing.
What is foot reflexology?
Reflexology is based on the idea that points on the feet correspond to different parts of the body. A reflexologist applies specific thumb and finger pressure to these points, along with gentle foot massage and stretching.
Whatever you believe about the "maps", the experience itself is deeply relaxing, and that's why so many guests come back for it. Reflexology is a wellness therapy, not a medical diagnosis or treatment.
What happens in a session
- Your feet are cleaned and warmed, often with a soak.
- You sit back in a reclined chair or lie down, fully clothed.
- Your therapist works through each foot with pressure, kneading and stretches, often including the lower calves.
- The session ends with a calm, gentle massage.
Sessions are typically 30–45 minutes.
How it feels
Most of it feels wonderful. A few points may feel tender — that's normal, especially if you've been on your feet a lot. Tell your therapist if anything is too intense.
When to choose reflexology
- After shopping, travel or a long event — see our M Block day-out guide
- On a lunch break, since there's no oil on your body or hair — see lunch-break massage
- When you want to relax but don't want a full-body massage
- For older parents who may prefer a seated, clothed therapy
When to skip it or check first
Tell us if you have foot injuries, open cuts, infections, gout, blood-clotting issues, diabetes-related foot problems, or if you're pregnant. We'll advise whether it's suitable.
Small habits for happier feet
- Rotate your shoes; avoid wearing the same tight pair every day.
- Roll your foot on a ball or bottle for a minute in the evening.
- Stretch your calves after long walks.
- Moisturise your heels, especially in Delhi's dry winter.
Foot reflexology is available at all Angkasa outlets. It also makes a lovely gift for parents — see spa gift ideas.
