Shiatsu Massage Explained: Japanese Pressure-Point Therapy

Calm treatment room at Angkasa spa, Gurugram

Shiatsu means "finger pressure" in Japanese. It's a calm, rhythmic therapy where the therapist applies steady pressure along lines and points on the body. Like Thai massage, it's usually done in comfortable clothing, without oil.

How Shiatsu works

Shiatsu is based on traditional East Asian ideas about energy flowing through the body along pathways called meridians. In practice, the therapist uses thumbs, palms and sometimes elbows to press slowly and steadily along these lines, combined with gentle stretches and rotations of the joints.

The pressure is held rather than rubbed. That gives Shiatsu its distinct, almost meditative rhythm.

What it feels like

  • Steady, sinking pressure — not sharp, not quick.
  • A slow pace, with pauses.
  • Gentle stretches of the neck, arms and legs.
  • A deep sense of calm, sometimes combined with feeling more energetic afterwards.

Who might enjoy Shiatsu

  • People who don't want oil on their skin
  • Those who like firm, still pressure more than gliding strokes
  • Anyone feeling tired, tense or "out of balance"
  • People curious about traditional Asian therapies

Shiatsu vs Thai vs reflexology

  • Thai massage uses more dynamic stretching and movement. See Thai massage guide.
  • Shiatsu is slower and more about holding pressure on points.
  • Foot reflexology focuses only on the feet. See foot reflexology guide.

Is it safe for everyone?

Shiatsu is gentle for most people, but please tell us if you are pregnant, have a recent injury, osteoporosis, a blood-clotting disorder, or a heart condition. Shiatsu is a wellness therapy and doesn't replace medical care.

Tips for your first session

  • Wear or change into loose clothing.
  • Breathe slowly — matching your breath to the pressure helps you relax into it.
  • Tell your therapist if any point feels too intense.
  • Keep the rest of your day light and drink water.

Shiatsu is available at all Angkasa outlets. If you're unsure whether to choose Shiatsu or Thai, call us and describe how you feel — we'll suggest one.
