Massage for Older Adults: A Gentle Guide for Parents and Grandparents

Many of our guests book sessions for their parents. It's a wonderful gift — but older adults often need a gentler approach. Here's how to make it safe and comfortable.
Why many older adults enjoy massage
- Relaxation and a sense of being cared for
- Easing general stiffness
- Feeling calmer and sleeping better
- A pleasant outing with family
Gentle therapies that usually suit
- Foot reflexology — done fully clothed in a comfortable position. Often the best first choice. See our foot reflexology guide.
- Gentle Swedish massage with light pressure.
- Head, neck & shoulder — short and soothing; can often be done seated.
- Aroma therapy with mild oils.
Therapies to be careful with
- Deep tissue — skin and tissues can be more delicate with age.
- Thai massage — strong stretching may not suit stiff or replaced joints.
- Steam, jacuzzi and hot potli — heat can affect blood pressure and balance.
