Massage During Pregnancy: What's Safe and What to Avoid

Pregnancy brings backaches, swollen feet and plenty of tiredness, so it's natural to want a massage. Many women enjoy gentle massage during pregnancy — but it needs extra care. Here's what to know.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Always speak to your doctor before booking a massage while pregnant.
Talk to your doctor first
Your doctor knows your pregnancy. It's especially important to check if you have:
- A high-risk pregnancy
- High blood pressure or pre-eclampsia
- A history of blood clots
- Bleeding, cramping or placenta concerns
- Diabetes or other medical conditions
Many spas, including ours, may also ask about how many weeks pregnant you are.
What to avoid
- Hot tubs, jacuzzis and steam rooms. Raising your core temperature isn't advised in pregnancy. See our jacuzzi and steam guide.
- Deep tissue and firm pressure, especially on the legs.
- Lying flat on your back for long periods in later pregnancy.
- Certain essential oils. Some aren't recommended in pregnancy. Read our aromatherapy guide and ask for an unscented or mild oil.
- Hot potli and heated treatments.
- Strong stretching, such as in Thai massage.
What's usually more comfortable
- Gentle, light pressure — similar to a soft Swedish massage.
- Side-lying positions supported with pillows.
- Foot and lower-leg massage done gently (check with your doctor and tell your therapist).
- Head, neck and shoulder massage while seated or side-lying.
